The measured footprint

The 2025 footprint was 2.5 tonnes of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent: every greenhouse gas counted as the amount of carbon dioxide that would warm the planet by the same amount). It was measured with the EcoCounts method, the same one used by the community carbon group cyberspaceroad's founder set up in North London. Measuring comes first in every piece of carbon work cyberspaceroad does for clients, so it would be odd to skip it here.

Hosting

This website is hosted by Webarchitects, a co-operative whose servers run on renewable electricity. The site itself is small: hand-written pages with no tracking, no analytics and fonts served from this domain, so each visit moves very little data.

Energy and equipment

The work is done from home, on a renewable electricity tariff, so there is no office to heat and no commute. Computers are repaired when they break, and older machines stay in use by running Linux, long after their manufacturers have lost interest in them.

Travel

Meetings are by video call unless being in the room matters. Local visits are by bike and longer ones by train. There is no car, and no flights.

Buying

• Open-source software wherever it does the job, which is most of the time.
• Banking with The Co-operative Bank.
• Suppliers chosen for who runs them: co-operatives and small firms ahead of large platforms.
• Fewer subscriptions and services, each kept until it stops being useful.
